Michael Jackson Tops Billboard Charts after his Death – week ending 28th June 2009

Michael Jackson has topped the Billboard charts, occupying 9 out of the 10 top spots for Top Pop Catalog Albums after the singer’s sudden death on Thursday June 25^th 2009 at the age of 50.

Michael Jackson's album Number Ones was reportedly No. 1, selling an estimated 108,000 copies during the week ending June 28^th 2009.  The Essential Michael Jackson album and Thriller occupied second and third sport on the charts with sales of 102,000 and 101,000 respectively.

According to Billboard (found on www.Billboard.com), Michael Jackson’s album “Number Ones” was the only Jackson title on the chart prior to the singer’s death. It occupied position number 20 with 4,000 copies sold.

According to Billboard, Jackson's 1979 album “Off the Wall” was holding position No. 4 with 33,000 sales followed by “Bad” with 17,000 sales.

Michael Jackson’s “Jackson 5's The Ultimate Collection” held fifth position on the charts with 18,000 sales. “Dangerous, Greatest Hits: History - Volume 1” and “The Ultimate Collection” occupied 6^th and 7^th position on the charts.

The only non Michael Jackson album on the Billboard charts holding a top 10 position was helpd by a re-issue of a soundtrack from the movie Woodstock, which was sitting on 10^th position on the charts with 8,000 sales.

According to Billboard, Michael Jackson sold 415,000 solo albums in the week ending June 28^th 2009 compared to 10,000 sales for the week June 21^st 2009.

According to Billboard, an estimated 2.6 million digital downloads Michael Jackson songs and the Jackson 5 during the week ending June 28^th 2009, up from the 48,000 sales for the week ending June 21^st 2009.

The music industry anticipates many more sales, especially when unreleased tracks do get released or when some of his greatest hits are repackaged. It is thought that sales from repackaged and such new releases will go on for many years, well beyond Elvis and the Beatles.
